Dev Deepawali 2026: Complete Date, Muhurat, Significance & Varanasi Travel Guide

Dev Deepawali 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, on the full moon of Kartik Purnima. The Pradosh Kaal muhurat for daan puja runs between 5:08 PM and 7:47 PM on the same day.

Dev Deepawali, or the Dewv Diwali, is the festival of the Gods that falls 15 days after the main Diwali celebrations (Roop or Narak Chaturdashi) according to the Hindu Panchang. All 84 Ghats of Kashi are decorated with lamps and diyas, glowing from the inside out as a divine welcome to the Gods.

According to Hindu wisdom, the festival of Dev Deepawali is believed to commemorate the day Lord Shiva killed demon Tripurasura, who, along with his two brothers, had grown so powerful that none of the gods could slay him. He had received a boon from Brahma that he could only be killed when all three cities floating in the sky built by him would align, and only then would an arrow be showered on them at the same time. Lord Shiva took the form of Tripurari, waited for the moment they aligned, and killed the demon; the event later came to be known as Tripura Samhara.

The gods are believed to have descended from the heavens to take a holy bath in the Ganga at Kashi and light lamps in the name of Shiv Ji. Even today, people believe that taking a dip in the river and offering a prayer on this night could liberate them from the sins of many lifetimes and lead them towards Moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

What makes it different from other festivals of lights is the fact that all the 84 ghats of Varanasi, from Assi Ghat in the south to Raj Ghat in the north, are decorated with diyas, and the Ganga Aarti performed that night is bigger and more synchronised as compared to any other night of the year. The deep daan ritual is performed with dozens of priests and thousands of people gathered on the banks to witness conch shell sounds and Vedic chants echoing in the air.

Unlike Diwali, which is a pan-Indian, national holiday that has a public holiday attached in most of the states, Dev Diwali is best thought of as a regional/devotional festival that has since evolved into a major cultural tourism attraction over the last several years, and hundreds of thousands of domestic and international visitors flock to Varanasi every year.

Dev Diwali vs Diwali: What’s The Difference?

Both Diwali and Dev Diwali have the word ‘Diwali’ in their names; still, many of us often confuse these two terms. However, they have nothing to do with each other, and you should understand the key differences between Diwali and Dev Diwali in order to witness the grandeur of Kashi during Dev Diwali.

First of all, the most prominent holiday in Indian culture, Diwali, is celebrated on the new moon night (Amavasya) of the Hindu calendar. It is dedicated to the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after a 14-year exile. The main Diwali festival is also associated with Goddess Lakshmi, the deity who gives wealth and prosperity. Also, Diwali is celebrated nationwide and in a few other countries globally, where families gather, celebrate, exchange gifts and sweets, etc., and it is supposed to bring enormous bliss to the entire family.

However, Dev Deepawali is celebrated 15 days after Diwali, on the full moon day of the lunar month. Dev Diwali is observed in a few cities, including Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh only. Dedicated to Shiv Ji and his victory over the evil Tripurasura, it is celebrated with lights, chants, and vibrant Ganga Aarti going on over 84 Ganga ghats of Kashi.

Other Religious Significances of Kartik Purnima

Kartik Purnima has associations with religions other than Hinduism which may explain why the celebration holds such a significant place in the hearts of people coming from India:

Event

Specifications

Matsya Avatar of Vishnu

Some people associate Kartik Purnima with the appearance of the Matsya Avatar of Lord Vishnu, who saved the ancient-most wisdom through scriptures.

Birth of Lord Kartikeya (Skanda)

In some regions, this day is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Kartikeya (Skanda), the son of Shiva and Parvati, and the patron of war and victory.

Guru Nanak Jayanti

It is also Guru Nanak Ji's birthday for the Sikh community, and in 2026, Guru Nanak Jayanti will fall on the same day as Dev Diwali (24 November), because both festivals are associated with the same lunar month.

Tulsi Vivah

It is the end of the Chaturmas period, and it’s also associated with the day of symbolic marriage between Maa Tulsi plant and Lord Vishnu.

Pushkar Mela and Snan

The Pushkar Mela (Kartik Purnima snan) and bathing in Pushkar Lake are associated with the festival and the cult of Lord Brahma being worshipped here only.

These are some of the reasons why Kartik Purnima and Dev Diwali in particular appeal to such a wide range of devotees and not only to those who follow a particular tradition.

Best Ghats in Varanasi to Visit During Dev Deepawali for Divine Experience

Any ghat between Assi Ghat in the south and Raj Ghat in the north provides good views of the illuminated riverfront, since diyas burn continuously along this stretch. The area around Dashashwamedh Ghat and Kedar Ghat is the most crowded and hosts the most elaborate version of the Ganga Aarti but is the best place to see it, although the view is obstructed by the massive crowds.

For less-crowded but still good views, seek out ghats farther from the main aarti sites, such as Assi Ghat or Panchganga Ghat. But most travel guides and repeat visitors will tell you that the best vantage point is actually on the river itself. On a boat, you can see all the illuminated ghats at once, providing an uninterrupted, panoramic view of the Dev Diwali celebrations.

Deep Daan During Dev Deepawali

Deepdaan also is one of the main rituals followed during Dev Diwali, and differs from the mass lighting of the diyas taking place all along the ghats. In this ritual, you must light an earthen lamp (on a thin piece of wood) and offers a personal prayer for the wellbeing of your family members, deceased ancestors or a personal wish and releases it on the water surface of the Ganga.

It has a symbolic meaning, as well - floating of the lighted lamp away on the waters is likened to a personal offering, which is received and carried on further by something bigger and more powerful than oneself, a tiny bit of self-fulfilment added to the endless flow of the river. Deep daan is performed by the individual pilgrims at the ghats during the whole evening and is one of the most photographed activities of the festival, but it’s something usually performed privately and modestly.

Travel Tips for Visiting Varanasi During Dev Diwali

If you’re planning to visit Varanasi to experience Dev Deepawali in 2026, you must keep these in mind:

  • Book transport and accommodation in advance. Due to high demand, boats and hotels near the ghats tend to fill up quickly and can be way too expensive last minute.

  • Arrive early in mid-afternoon so that you can avoid the crowds. There are many steps leading down the river and it's better to take your time getting there. Roads near the ghats are closed due to traffic by dusk.

  • Allow ample time to get away as it is not unusual for fireworks and displays. So, if you are catching a train or a flight back that same night, you should leavy early.

  • Be respectful of the ghats as they are considered holy, do not litter. Do not take pictures of people who are praying.

  • Wear warm clothes as evenings can get chilly around the riverfront. It is also a good idea to wear comfortable shoes as you will most likely need to walk up and down many a times.

  • If you are looking to hire a boat ride, it is a good idea to book a private boat ride tour in Varanasi during Dev Deepawali in advance. You will avoid crowds and have a better view of the aarti and fireworks displays as they will take you to the best vantage point.
