Tour Overview
Ladakh has a unique blend of high altitude scenery, which makes it a haven for migratory birds and wildlife. The Indus River belt, the Nubra Valley and possibly the Changthang region are prime destinations for a 7-10 day tour, focusing on the same, including lakes like Tso Moriri and Tso Kar. Expect to see resident birds like the Himalayan Snowcock and Tibetan Sandgrouse, as well as a variety of ducks and badgers, as well as some of the higher altitudes. Wildlife sightings may include the Tibetan wild ass (Kiang), the elusive snow leopard (in Hemis National Park), red fox and blue sheep (Bharal). This trip is not only about bird watching, but also offers an opportunity to explore Ladakh's unique and robust culture and stunning landscapes.
Itinerary
Delhi to Leh
- Arrival at Leh Airport Accept the warm welcome and make your way to a place where you can relax, which is the pre-booked hotel.
- Check in and Relax Settle into your pre-booked hotel and allow yourself and your mind to relax for the rest of the day so that both your body and mind can acclimatise.
- If you get time in the afternoon or have free time, you can roam around the nearby areas.
- You can also get an opportunity to see species like Black Kite, Black-billed Magpie, Red-billed Chough, Mountain Chiffchaff etc.
- At night, stay at a hotel in Leh and rest.
Bird watching around the Indus River belt
- After a morning wake up and prepare for a full day of bird watching.
- Travel to the Indus river belt from Shey, about 18 km east of Leh, crossing swamps and irrigation channels or head upstream from the pool at Choglamsar.
- Expect to see Streaked Rosefinch (Carpodacusrubicilloides), Bluethroats (Lusciniasvecica), White-winged Redstart, Rosy Pipit (Antharoscetus), Pipit (Anthuspinolata), Hobby (Hypotrichos), Ibisbill (Ibidorhynchusstruthersii) or Water Rail in summer.
- Apart from all this, you can also explore the wetlands, thick buckthorn patches along the Indus river, also known as pasturelands.
- Night stay at the hotel and rest.
Leh to Nubra valley
- Drive to Nubra Valley crossing the Khardung La pass, the world's highest motorable pass (18,380 ft/5,700 m) and expect to see ducks, waders, raptors, White-browed Tit Warbler, etc.
- Mammals including Tibetan fox, lynx, pika, Himalayan blue sheep, Bactrian camel (semi-wild) can be one of the exciting finds for bird watchers.
- Also, Cape Hare (Race tibetanus) can be seen only here in India.
- Return to the hotel for dinner.
- Relax and stay overnight in Nubra Valley.
Nubra Valley to Leh
- Cross Khardung La pass and drive back to Leh via the same route.
- Stay at the hotel and spend the night.
Leh to Rumbak Valley - Sightseeing on your way
- Spend the whole day bird watching in the areas around the valley of Rumbak.
- Birds like Brown and Robin Accentor, Tickle Leaf Warbler, Chukar, Streaked Rose-Finch, Red-billed Chog, Common and Fork-tailed Swift, Tibetan Snow-Finch, Himalayan Snow-Cock, Fire-fronted Serin, Tweed etc. are also easily seen.
- There are also a lot of mammals like Urial, Himalayan Marmot, Tibetan Wolf and Argali above Yurutse.
- Later, return to Leh for overnight stay
Leh to Tsomoriri
- Situated at a high altitude of 4,650 m (1,200 ft), Tsomoriri is the largest lake in the Rupshu plains and can be reached in a day's drive from Leh, enjoying beautiful scenic views.
- The lake is also a well-known and more important breeding ground for the Bar-headed Goose Anser indicus in Ladakh.
- The Great Crested Grebe P. cristatus and the Black-necked Grebe Podicepsnigricollis are both found here.
- An Arctic Skua Stercorarius Parasiticus was once found chasing a Brown-headed Gull Larus brunnicephalus at the top of the lake!
- Rose finches, accentors, and mountain-finches can also be seen in the pea-bush-covered northern slopes.
- Mammals include blue sheep, weasel, fox, marmot, woolly hare, and pika.
- Overnight at homestay and relax.
Puga to Tsokar lake
- After breakfast, drive to Tsokar via Puga valley and Polo Kong Ka La.
- The lake is home to waterfowl, Black-necked Crane, Common Redshank and many waders.
- The most common mammalian species seen here are Tibetan wild ass, Stoliczka's mountain vole and marmot.
- Also found are Plain-backed Snowfinch, Little Owl.
- Horned Lark, Tibetan Snow Finch, Tibetan Sandgrouse, Hume's Short-toed Lark are exotic birds found in Tsokar Lake.
- Ruddy Shelduck, Avocet,
- Breeding colony of Crested Grebe, Black-necked Crane can be seen around the freshwater lakes in the afternoon.
- Overnight at homestay and relax.
Full Day Tsokar Exploration
- The areas around the lake are covered with marshes and grasslands which provide a rich habitat for a variety of bird species.
- The ecosystem around Tsokar contributes to the life of a variety of avifauna.
- So let’s wait and travel for another day to see and admire these beautiful creatures.
- Relax by staying overnight at a homestay.
Tsokar to Leh
- Head back to Leh via the Tanglang Pass to see more of the bird species there.
- Along the way, you will spot many fascinating species like the White-capped Redstart and the Tibetan Snowcock.
- After your excursion, reach Leh in the late afternoon and stay overnight in Leh.
Leh to Delhi- Departure
- After having an early breakfast, reach the airport of Ladakh.
- Catch an early morning flight and return to Delhi with lifelong memories of your beautiful moments of this trip.
